The museum was established in 1930 as a maritime museum by Archer Huntington and Homer Ferguson, as a private works project with workers from the Newport News Shipbuilding and Drydock Company.
The museum is a part of America’s National Maritime Museum and contains the largest maritime history collection in the Western Hemisphere.
