Former Ukrop’s – Roanoke, Virginia
This is the former Ukrop’s grocery store at 2331 Franklin Rd SW in Roanoke, VA. While the architecture of this store is very similar to that of most of their other 2000s-era stores, this one had many features that none of the other stores had, such as an underground parking garage, an indoor/outdoor seating area for the café, escalators, and an elevator. Additionally, it featured more premium architectural elements like the U’s and larger entrances.
Unfortunately, this store only lasted a few years before Ukrop’s began winding down their retail operations to sell to Ahold. Since this store technically closed before Ahold took over the retail operations, it was never operated as a MARTIN’S.
Today, the former grocery store houses the Carilion Clinic Institute for Orthopaedics and Neurosciences.
