Former Ukrop’s/MARTIN’S – Richmond, Virginia
This is the former Ukrop’s, former MARTIN’S grocery store at 5201 Chippenham Xing Ctr, Richmond, VA. The store was built in 1998 and it is surrounded by Ukrop Park… a public park owned by a sports team that is owned by a member of the Ukrop family.
My guess is the Ukrop family looked at this land as a commercial real estate opportunity, however it never came to fruition.
The store was rebranded as MARTIN’S (after the sellout to Ahold) and stayed open until July 10th, 2017 when MARTIN’S sold and shuttered their presence in Richmond as part of the Ahold (who owned MARTIN’S) and Delhaize (who owned Food Lion) merger.
Ukrop’s still owns this store, but I highly doubt we’ll ever see a Ukrop’s store resurrected since they likely signed an agreement disallowing them from ever reopening as a grocer.
