Former Portsmouth Civic Center – Portsmouth, Virginia
This is the former, and mostly abandoned Portsmouth Civic Center, located at 701 Crawford St, Portsmouth, VA. It was built in 1969 with four buildings (although the Magistrate’s office looks newer) combined in an elevated plaza. Two of the buildings closed in 2012 when their offices relocated, and the Magistrate’s office closed in 2020.
The two buildings that closed have been condemned, and the jail (the tallest building in the complex) was also condemned, however I don’t believe it is condemned anymore since the Sheriff’s department doesn’t have enough money to fix this jail or build a new one (which is a terrible reason to keep a condemned building open, since a private building wouldn’t be granted the same exception, buuuuuuuut).
